Building on a Legacy: Richard Ahrens and the Evolution of a Family Business (1960s–Today)
A Three-Part Series Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary
Editor’s Note
From father to son, a century-old tradition of American craftsmanship evolves into a modern South Florida design-build construction company.
This article concludes our three-part series, “Forged in America: The Ahrens Legacy,” commemorating America’s 250th anniversary and celebrating the generations of the Ahrens family whose craftsmanship, entrepreneurship, and dedication helped shape South Florida and contribute to our country’s great history.
A New Generation, A Shared Vision
For more than a century, the Ahrens family has helped shape South Florida’s built environment. What began with ornamental ironwork, roofing, and sheet metal fabrication evolved through generations of entrepreneurship into the commercial construction company known today as Ahrens Companies.
Following the pioneering work of Frank Frederick Ahrens, his son Charles Ahrens and Charles’s brother carried the family’s businesses forward through decades of growth and change. As Palm Beach County expanded, their operations adapted to meet the demands of a developing region.
For Charles, preserving the family enterprise also meant preparing the next generation to lead it. His son, Richard Ahrens, born in West Palm Beach in the late 1940s, grew up knowing he would one day take over the family business. Working alongside his father, Richard learned the trade firsthand, developing the practical knowledge, business judgment, and commitment to quality that would guide his career. Yet Richard’s talents extended far beyond construction.
By age nine, he was a concert pianist before pursuing competitive swimming at an elite level. After graduating from Forest Hill Community High School, he attended the University of Florida, where he competed on the university’s swim team for four years. Graduating in 1969, he pursued studies in business administration and marketing, further developing his interests in engineering, accounting, and related disciplines. His education, athletic discipline, and years of mentorship under Charles prepared him to bring a fresh perspective to the family’s construction business.

From Family Tradition to Modern Construction
As Richard became increasingly involved in the company’s operations, father and son worked together to navigate a changing construction industry. Charles brought decades of experience and established business relationships, while Richard introduced new ideas focused on efficiency, innovation, and emerging building technologies.
Following the eventual sale of the family’s material supply and ornamental ironworks businesses, Richard purchased the construction portion of the enterprise from his father’s generation, assuming leadership of the business he had spent much of his life preparing to run.
Recognizing the growing demand for durable, economical, and adaptable commercial facilities, Richard championed pre-engineered metal building systems (PEMB) as a practical solution for South Florida’s evolving construction needs.
His vision helped expand the application of metal buildings beyond traditional industrial uses, demonstrating their potential for architecturally distinctive, hurricane-resistant commercial structures.
Under his leadership, Ahrens Companies developed into a comprehensive design-build general contractor, combining in-house architectural design, construction management, value engineering, and specialized steel erection capabilities. The company expanded its expertise to include hybrid metal and masonry construction, structural steel, and custom commercial facilities.
Throughout the company’s continued growth, Richard’s wife, Judy Ahrens, Vice President of Ahrens Companies, has been a valued partner and steadfast supporter, contributing her dedication to preserving the family business and its enduring legacy.

Building South Florida’s Future
Richard’s approach to construction helped position Ahrens Companies as a trusted partner for businesses and municipalities throughout South and Central Florida.
The company’s portfolio spans aviation hangars, marine facilities, industrial warehouses, office space, municipal buildings, recreational developments, retail, restaurants and more. Notable projects include facilities for Jet Aviation, Fontainebleau Aviation, Hinckley Yachts, and the award-winning Rotortech Aviation Services expansion, along with community projects such as the Palm Beach Gardens Tennis Center and The Nest Par 3 Golf Course facilities, and including Florida staples such Flanigan’s Restaurants and their chain of Big Daddy Liquor Stores.

Each reflects the company’s commitment to delivering practical, innovative building solutions tailored to its clients’ operational needs, while maintaining the craftsmanship and personal accountability established by earlier generations.
Leadership Beyond Construction
Richard’s influence extends beyond the construction industry. As one of the five founders of the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, he helped advance economic development and business investment throughout the region. His service on the Florida Building Code Board further reflects his commitment to improving construction standards and building safety.
A lifelong supporter of his alma mater, Richard has served as NCAA Compliance Officer and Treasurer of The Gator Splash Club. His philanthropic commitments to the University of Florida include support for the Bill Harlan Meeting Room, Farrior Hall, the Heavener Football Training Center, and swimming scholarship endowments.

These contributions reflect his belief in investing not only in businesses and buildings, but also in the communities and future generations they serve.
A Legacy Recognized, A Future Still Being Built
In 2026, Richard was inducted into the Metal Construction News Hall of Fame, recognizing his contributions to the advancement of pre-engineered metal construction. That same year, his leadership and the company’s history were featured in the Legacy Builders Special Edition of Built America Magazine.
These honors celebrate a career shaped by innovation, perseverance, and a commitment to carrying forward the work of generations before him.
As America commemorates its 250th anniversary, the Ahrens family story reflects the entrepreneurial spirit and craftsmanship that helped build the nation. From Frank’s early metalworking enterprises to Charles’s stewardship and Richard’s transformation of the family business, each generation has built upon the achievements of the last.
As Richard Ahrens celebrates another birthday, we recognize not only his remarkable career, but also the legacy he inherited, strengthened, and continues to carry forward.
The Ahrens legacy was forged by generations. Under Richard’s leadership, it continues to be built.

Happy Birthday, Richard! From all of us at Ahrens Companies, thank you for your leadership, vision, and dedication to building a future worthy of the generations who came before you.
